Refuge-based services are one of the key elements of a package of specialist help and support provided by local specialist domestic violence services in Women's Aid's national network. Refuges offer emergency and temporary accommodation, advocacy and support to women escaping abuse.

On a typical day, over 7000 women and children are resident in refuge accommodation in England (view survey 2006). Refuge addresses (and sometimes their telephone numbers) are confidential for safety reasons.
There are nearly 400 specialist domestic violence organisations providing refuge accommodation for women in the UK. They are however unevenly spread throughout the country, and one in three local authority areas does not have any refuge provision or associated specialist domestic violence services - see Map of Gaps report.
